Israel Establishes Centers of Research Excellence; Hadassah Physician Chosen as Co-Chair of Molecular Medicine Group
The Government of Israel and the Israel Council for Higher Education have established Israeli Centers of Research Excellence (I-Core) to strengthen scientific research in Israel. Prof. Eitan Galun, Director of Hadassah’s Goldyne Savad Institute of Gene Therapy, has been chosen to co-chair the molecular medicine scientific group, working with Prof. Chaim Cedar, Professor of Molecular Biology, Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine.
Prof. Galun’s I-Core will focus its research efforts on "Systems-Level Analysis of the Molecular Basis for Human Diseases: From Genomics to Personalized Therapy.” The group includes 19 researchers, from Hadassah and Hebrew University, as well as Tel Aviv and Bar Ilan Universities and Sheba Hospital. The group has also attracted four Israeli researchers who have been working in Massachusetts to return to Israel to join the I-Core. The other initial Centers will focus on "Advanced Approaches in Cognitive Science,” "Advanced Topics in Computer Sciences,” and "Renewable, Sustainable, and Alternative Sources of Energy.” The goal is to create 30 Centers of Excellence within the next five years, where high-level researchers in defined scientific fields will work together to advance innovative breakthrough research and establish Israel as a recognized world leader in scientific research. Each Center will serve as an anchor for scientific infrastructure and research groups in its particular field. hadassahinternational.org/ | |
