An innovative procedure to remove cancerous tumors from the gastrointestinal tract was performed at the Hadassah University Medical Center’s Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases recently. Using special instruments inserted through an endoscope – a surgical tool used to examine body cavities – surgeons ‘peeled’ the lesion from the gastrointestinal wall.

 

Prof. Hans- Wolf Sievert, Head of Gastroenterology at Oldenburg-University Hospital in Germany, an internationally renowned expert in the field, conducted the pioneering procedure, which Hadassah plans to introduce in the coming weeks.

 

Subsequently, Hadassah convened a two-day workshop in the procedure for gastroenterology and liver experts from throughout Israel. Prof. Sievert keynoted the proceedings with the active participation of Dr. Yael Kopelman, Director of the Endoscopy Unit and Dr. Harold Jacob, both of Hadassah’s Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases and Dr. Yoav Mintz, Director of Hadassah’s Center for Innovative Surgery.
